Waterless Printing Benefits
What is waterless printing? Technically speaking, it is an offset lithographic printing that does not require the water (dampening) system required by conventional printing methods. To a print designer, it is a way to reduce costs, obtain more paper options, and
obtain more photographic detail. How is all this possible? Let's examine conventional
and waterless printing in more detail.
Conventional printing is a chemical process that involves the use of isopropyl
alcohol (or similar substitutes) and requires a skilled press operator to carefully balance
the ink and water. Compared to this, waterless printing is a simple mechanical process
that transfers ink to the substrate. And this means much more color consistency
throughout each pressrun, higher screen rulings for better detail quality, and much faster
makereadies.
Waterless printing's advantages stem from it's inherently low dot gain, which is up
to 50% less than conventional printing. This low dot gain permits higher screen rulings
for much better detail. This fact, combined waterless printing's higher average ink
density (20% on average), enables waterless printing to achieve much better print
contrasts and photographic detail than conventional lithography.
Ideal for rush jobs involving highly detailed photographs or artwork, makeready
